Software Defined Networking Supported by IEEE 802.1Q

چکیده
This paper gives an overview on how Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles can be applied to existing Ethernet merchant silicon considering the requirements modern networks face. We show that existing Layer 2 features specified by IEEE 802.1Q support SDN. The bridge architecture [1] supports control plane/data plane split by design and also allows for external control e.g. by an SDN Controller. The data plane provided by existing chips is feature rich for network virtualization and supports even more features like OAM. We outline the principles of SDN over bridges and show a number of possibilities for further research and development.

RFC 4363 Bridge MIB Extensions January 2006 1 . The Internet - Standard Management Framework
This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP-based internets. In particular, it defines two MIB modules for managing the capabilities of MAC bridges defined by the IEEE 802.1D-1998 (TM) MAC Bridges and the IEEE 802.1Q-2003 (TM) Virtual LAN (VLAN) standards for bridging between Local Area Network (LAN) segments. One MIB ...
متن کاملPriority Flow Control: Build Reliable Layer 2 Infrastructure
This document describes priority flow control (PFC), one of the functions of IEEE 802.1 Data Center Bridging, introduced to address reliability at Layer 2 on the Ethernet medium. PFC enables lossless semantics for a subset of the Layer 2 flows carried on an Ethernet segment. The subset of flows subject to the lossless semantics is identified by the IEEE 802.1p class of service (CoS) information...
متن کاملIEEE 802.11s Mesh Networking NS-3 Model
We present an IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh networking model implemented in the open source Network Simulator 3 environment. Design solutions, supported and unsupported features of draft standard, optional protocols extensions and heuristics are summarized. Simulation of two typical mesh networking scenarios illustrates model behavior and simulation methodology. We argue that our NS-3 802.11s mode...
متن کاملA Software-Defined Networking Model for Smart Transformers with ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451 Sensors
The IEC 61850-advanced smart transformer shows an improved performance in monitoring, controlling, and protecting the devices and equipment in smart substation. However, the heterogeneity, feasibility and network control problems have limited smart transformers in network performance. To address these issues, a software-defined networking model is proposed using ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451 networks. The...
